CBD is everywhere in running now, and most of what is written about it is either marketing or dismissal. Here is the middle.
Start with the words, because they are used carelessly
Full spectrum keeps everything in the hemp plant, including trace THC.
Broad spectrum keeps the range of hemp compounds and removes the THC. This is what we make.
Isolate strips everything out except CBD alone.
THC-free has no legal definition. It means whatever the brand wants it to mean, unless they show you a lab report. Ask for one.
Topical versus oral, which is not the same product
A capsule or a tincture enters your bloodstream and circulates.
A topical is applied to skin and is not designed to do that. Different product, different purpose, and you should be suspicious of anyone who blurs the two.
This distinction matters for anyone subject to drug testing, which we cover in a separate article.
What the research actually supports
Here is where most brand blogs start overclaiming, so let us be plain.
Research into topical cannabinoids is early. There are promising studies, there are null results, and there is not yet the kind of large, repeated, well-controlled evidence base that would let anyone honestly promise you an outcome. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling harder than the evidence allows.
What is not in question is what you feel. Menthol produces a cooling sensation on contact. Capsicum, which is chili pepper extract, produces warmth. Those are reliable and immediate, and they are a large part of why a recovery topical feels like it is doing something.
We would rather tell you that than imply a claim we cannot support.
What to actually check before you buy anything
A lab report you can match to your product. Not a generic PDF. A certificate with a batch number that matches the number printed on the thing in your hand. If a brand cannot produce that, everything else they say is unverifiable.
Total THC, stated as a number. Our three products test at Total THC Not Detected, and every certificate is published here.
Potency against label claim. A brand saying 5000mg means nothing on its own. What matters is whether an independent lab found it. Ours came back at 96.1%, 97.3% and 97.8% of label across the three products.
The full ingredient list. Not "key ingredients." All of them. If a brand publishes six of twenty-four ingredients, ask why.
Format that fits the job. A roll-on for a spot you can point to, like calves or shins. A pump for larger areas like quads and hamstrings. A balm for skin rather than sensation.
The honest summary
A CBD topical is not going to change your training load, fix your mileage progression, or replace sleep.
What it can be is a two-minute ritual in the gap between sessions that you will actually do, made from ingredients you can read, tested by a lab you can check.
That is a smaller promise than most of this category makes. It is also one we can stand behind.
